হোমার তাঁর 'ওডিসি' লিখেছেন গ্রীক ভাষায়। কার্ল মার্ক্স তাঁর 'দাস ক্যাপিটাল' তাঁর মাতৃভাষা ব্যতীত অন্য কোন ভাষায় লিখেননি। মহাকবি গ্যেতে তাঁর 'ফাউস্ট' লিখেছেন তাঁর মাতৃভাষাতেই। বিশ্বকবির 'গীতাঞ্জলী'র সৃষ্টি বাংলায়। তেমনিভাবে, মহাকবি ফেরদৌসি তাঁর অনন্য কাব্য 'শাহনামা' রচনা করেছেন ফারসিতে, এবং শেক্সপীয়ার অমর হয়েছেন ইংরেজিতে সাহিত্য চর্চা করে। অর্থাৎ তাঁদের প্রত্যেকেই মহিয়সী হয়েছেন মাতৃভাষার চর্চা করে। মানুষের চিন্তার জগতকে কাঠামোবদ্ধ করে তাকে পরিপূর্ণতা দান করতে পারে শধুই মাতৃভাষা। তাহলে আমরা কেন আমাদের মাতৃভাষা বাংলার চর্চায় পিছিয়ে আছি? কেন আমরা বাংলাকে দূরে ঠেলে দিয়ে উচ্চশিক্ষার মাধ্যম হিসেবে ইংরেজীকে আপন করে নিচ্ছি? আমাদের মনে রাখতে হবে যে, অপর এক জাতির মাতৃভাষা কোনভাবেই আমাদের নিজ মাতৃভাষার পরিপূরক হতে পারে না। তাই আমরা যদি সে ভাষাতে জ্ঞানচর্চা করি, তবে আমাদের পক্ষে কখনই অনন্যসাধারণ কোন সাহিত্যকর্ম সম্ভব না, দুয়েকটি ব্যতিক্রম থাকতেও পারে, তবে তা উদাহরণ হবার নয়। যেহেতু আমরা ইংরেজিতে চিন্তা করতে পারি না (কেননা আমাদের চিন্তার বাহন আমাদের মাতৃভাষা), স...
